Quick Insights

  • Most of these actives can live in one routine. You don’t need a ban list!
  • You should know how much to use, when to use it, and whether your skin can handle it.
  • One new active at a time. If your skin stings, that’s your cue to slow down.

You lined up a few products you like. Then someone online said they might cancel each other out.
So... what do you do now?

Don’t worry, you don’t need a chemistry lesson for this!! Keep reading for the answers.

Can I use retinol and vitamin C together?

Yes. Vitamin C in the morning, retinol at night. They can share one routine. Just start the retinol slowly.

How I’d do it:

  • Morning: vitamin C, then moisturizer and sunscreen.
  • Night: retinol a few nights a week, then moisturizer.
  • Stinging, tight, or flaky? Pause the retinol. Don’t add more!!

Can I use retinol and salicylic acid together?

Not on the same night while you’re adjusting. Both can be drying.

Once your skin feels steady, I like a skin cycle. Night 1 exfoliant, night 2 retinol, nights 3 and 4 rest, then repeat. I suggest it to a lot of clients because it’s a gentle way to get the most from your retinol: the exfoliant clears dead skin first, you don’t overdo it, and your skin gets enough rest. I’ve seen beautiful results with it on clients.

Can I use retinol and niacinamide together?

Yes. If niacinamide is just a supporting ingredient in the formula, it can be beneficial alongside retinol, even in the same bottle. A strongly formulated niacinamide, like 5% or 10% where it’s one of the main actives, might be too intense with retinol. Best not to layer those together.

How I’d do it:

  • So niacinamide and retinol can stay in the same routine. A strong one goes in the morning, and retinol at night.
  • If retinol is new, let it be the only new step. Don’t add any more new active ingredients or products.

Can I use niacinamide and vitamin C together?

Yes! The old “they cancel each other out” warning comes from old lab tests, not from how you actually use skincare. Lots of modern formulas, including Korean ones, even combine them. In my experience, niacinamide can make that formula feel gentler and less irritating.

How I’d do it:

  • So they can stay in the same routine. If one of them is new, add it on its own, but very slowly.
  • Skin flushes or feels hot? Use one in the morning and one at night.
  • Always trust how your own skin reacts, even if other people online say they combine it just fine.

Can I use hyaluronic acid and retinol together?

Yes. I like a hydrating toner before retinol, because my skin is sensitive. In my experience, hydrating before or after can make retinol feel less intense and less irritating, even if you only do one of the two. If you tolerate retinol well, dry skin is totally fine.

How I’d do it:

  • Feeling tight? Keep the hydration. A toner works, or two layers of your hyaluronic serum.

A simple rule of thumb

Introduce one new active at a time, and give it a few weeks before you add the next. Otherwise you won’t know what your skin is reacting to. (I know how hard this is. I struggle with it too when I’m excited about new products! But when you’re dealing with skin issues, it’s the best gift you can give your skin, because you’ll actually know which product is causing trouble.)

Stinging, tightness, lingering redness, or flaking? Go back to cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen until your skin feels like itself again. Then bring the last new product back, but this time way more slowly than before. You can track how your skin responds in the Estie app, so Estie can follow up with you.

When to ask a professional

If you’re pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding, check with your doctor, dermatologist, or pharmacist before you use retinoids or acids. Do the same if you already use prescription skincare, or if you have a diagnosed skin condition.
